Researchers agree that the effects of the new regimens will be the strongest when several are combined. Dr. Folkman has stated repeatedly that angiogenesis inhibitors will initially work best in combination with chemo and radiation given at lower doses. Tumors send out signals to nearby blood vessels, directing them to duplicate their cells and build pathways to the tumor. And because different types of tumors each can send out several different types of signals, it is probable that "cocktails" of different inhibitors will be needed to control tumors. Therefore, the combination therapy would look something like this:
Immune System EnhancersIn Science Daily Magazine, an article dated 6/13/2000 quoted Eli Gorelik, PhD., professor of pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a member of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) "We have the first data suggesting that anti-tumor immunotherapy combined with vascular inhibition is a promising treatment strategy for cancer. Increasing anti-tumor immunity and combining this approach with anti-angiogenic drugs could provide a highly effective cancer therapy." Click on links below to learn more.
